What Is Chronic Pain?
We’ve all experienced pain. As children, for many of us, it was part of our way of discovering the world: bruises from jumping off of couches and cuts and splinters from climbing trees or falling on the ground while playing outside. As we’ve gotten older, our bodies go through normal wear and tear and stress from fulfilling our everyday obligations.
This is all common and expected. But sometimes, when we fail to experience relief from the pain we suffered even after our injuries have healed, we’re left dealing with constant pain. We’re not supposed to live life in what seems to be never-ending pain.
If you’ve been dealing with pain for anywhere between three and six months, you’re living with chronic pain. Your body’s mechanism for feeling pain starts in the brain. When you hurt yourself, the nerves in the location of your injury send electrical signals that travel through your body until they reach your brain. These signals tell your brain that you’re in pain. Your brain then transmits this message to you, resulting in your feeling the pain. When you suffer from chronic pain, these signals never end. The painful part of your body consistently sends messages to your brain that you are in pain, even after the injury to that part of your body has healed.
This long-term pain can be near-constant or can come and go with no rhyme or reason. Your pain may be aggravated by certain activities or actions and may prohibit you from engaging in physical activity because of the weakness and stiffness it’s caused you. No matter what part of your body is causing you pain, you’re forced to deal with the nagging sharp, stabbing, gnawing, throbbing, or burning pain way too often.
Chronic Pain Symptoms
It can be difficult to connect some of the symptoms you are feeling to chronic pain because they are so wide in range. But if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms along with pain in some part of your body, then your symptoms may be related to your chronic pain:
- Weakness
- Low energy
- Mood instability
- Loss of appetite
- Insomnia
- Exhaustion
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches aside from the pain
- Soreness
- Joint pain
- Anxiety
- Depression
Common Health Issues That Cause Chronic Pain
Often, chronic pain is triggered by an injury from an accident or as a result of a health issue or disease. Other times, chronic pain can come out of nowhere. Some of the common health conditions and diseases that can lead to chronic pain are:
- Cancer
- Chemotherapy side effects
- Arthritis
- Fibromyalgia
- Back pain
- Migraines
- Nerve damage
- Infections
- Stomach disorders, such as Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome/Disease or Celiac Disease
- Accident or sports injuries
- Diabetes
- Side effects of medication
- Reproductive conditions, such as fibroids, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and endometriosis
How to Minimize Chronic Pain
Luckily, there are several treatment options to reduce or eliminate chronic pain.
One of the most accessible treatment options is something you can implement in your everyday life, which is making lifestyle changes.
- If your sleeping habits are poor, taking steps to improve them can go far toward allowing your body a chance to repair and heal itself.
- You can also try your best to reduce the amount of stress you place on yourself, not just physically but mentally as well. The amount of stress that we all deal with can weigh on your body’s ability to function – and recover – as it’s supposed to. Some activities like yoga, relaxing treatments like massages, and therapy can help reduce your stress.
- You should also be sure that you’re consuming a proper diet. Healthy foods are fuel your body can use to heal, and some unhealthy foods can cause greater inflammation in your body, which can contribute to increased pain.
You may also be able to take medications that work to reduce inflammation in your body or that can target the pain directly to reduce aching. Common medications used for pain are sold over-the-counter, such as acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and aspirin. You may also find relief by applying topical solutions used to treat acute pain and inflammation.
AllCare Health & Pain can recommend a variety of treatments to help relieve chronic pain, and we can devise a plan to help you manage your symptoms.
